Age of the Millenials

Hi Leawood Families, I am attaching a clip from CBS News 60 Minutes. I think that it is worth viewing as we think about what it looks like to raise responsible kids. Please feel free to leave a comment after you view the clip.

Thanks and have a great day!

  1. I like to see the irony in this a bit, as it is the 50/60 somthings that are the parents of the generation that the clip portrays as being a challenge to boss at work. On the subject of over coddling, as they state it, I beleive that it becomes a problem when the intent is lost in translation. By that I mean, when we, as parents, in our over busy schedules, of racing from work, to soccer practice, to piano lessons, to the store, (and oh yea what about PTA) forget why we wish our children to know they are special. I am not a "boomer" and I am too old to be a "Miliinian" but I am a parent of 4 and I hope I can manage to pass on to my children that they are special just as the world is special. They should respect themselves, others, and the world as a prescious commodity that needs "coddling" itself. I think what was lost in translation is that it is ok to be 1st AND it is ok to be last.Always try your hardest and don't be afaid to get back up if you fall.

  2. I thought the article was interesting but a bit extreme. I have heard more about the problems with the children of helicopter parents in the academic setting rather than the workplace. I think and hope that the majority of people raise their children to be respectful and responsible. My kids know they are special and that they have the right to be loved and safe. They also know they have responsibilites and that some things are earned with hard work, not given to them.

This article doesn't reflect our country's current economic issues either. I think most people know they need to prove themselves to hang on to their jobs. It doesn't seem like many companies would be holding on to the millenials described in this article.
